The Very Best Gift

I'm a bit of a sap, even more so since having little man.

I cry at random things. A sad story on the news. When I hear a certain song that makes me reminisce.

I'm also a sucker for anything family. Whether it be my family or anyone else's. Great stories, memories, anything and everything. And I love everything about my hometown and years growing up there.

So when my hometown celebrated its Q125, I really wanted to be there. I love going home. Spending time with my family, old friends.

I had to work so I missed it, but I got a special little something from it when they opened the time capsule from our centennial. Twenty-five years ago my mom wrote a letter for each of us girls, knowing we would be opening it 25 years later.

When I found out, I couldn't wait pry open the rusted staple that held it together. And it was as special as I knew it would be.

Dear Katie,

Do you remember your nickname when you were little? Baby Doll. That always fit you so well. You are our baby girl and always such a doll. Now you are 32 years old and I know you are as beautiful and loving as you were when you were 7.

Everything always came so easy for you and everyone loved you. The kids in your class all liked you and you had lots of little boyfriends. Your teacher, Mrs Miller, said you are a born leader and that is a great gift. It will get you far.

What have you done in the past 25 years? Someone once told me you would probably be a model or an actress. That wouldn't surprise me, you are a very beautiful little girl. I hope whatever you do makes you happy and that you have everything that makes you happy.

Just while I'm writing this you came running in all excited. Our house cat was having kittens and you were so excited, you saw a kitten being born! I hope you keep that excitement about life and everything in it.

My beautiful Katie. Remember I will always love you and would do anything I could for you. I know you will make me proud of you in the years to come, as you have already in the last seven years.

Love, Mom

I'm not quite sure how I'm going to replicate this for my kiddos, but I'm going to do something similar. And I can only hope they appreciate it as much as I did.

  2. Oh my gosh! What a nice letter.. and So So true! =) I almost had tears! My aunt Leah said she remembered that my mom wrote us letters to put in the capsule so I was really excited to get them. Unfortunately, they may have been written but they didn't make it to the capsule. =( What an awesome gift!

    1. Dang...wish you guys would've gotten yours - it was such a cool surprise! I'm trying to remember if you guys were still in Emerson at this time, otherwise I think you would've just moved to SSC.

  4. Love this! What a wonderful gift to cherish from your mom!

I think you're doing just the same for Cruz by writing in your blog. It's going to be a great record of his first years! You could even make some of your posts into books for him to keep. I've done that with my preggo blog (for Tory and will do for Baby #2) as well as Tory's first year.

    1. Great point - I hope he enjoys reading about his first years as much as I've enjoyed writing them. It will also be great to remember details and dates of milestones when we get pregnant with number two. :)
